High Fructose Corn Syrup: Bad and Ugly. No Good.

Did you know that the number one source of dietary calories in America comes from a corn-based industrial sweetener known as high fructose corn syrup? Think about that...

That must mean high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is in a lot of the foods we eat, and we have no fear that HFCS could be of any harm. I mean, "they" have told us it is "natural", right?? So what is the big deal? Is it harmful? Is it natural?

Well, HFCS is a refined ingredient used to sweeten almost everything processed: sodas, cookies, soups, yogurt, bread, salad dressing, cereal, iced tea, ketchup, bacon, peanut butter, mustard, "health bars", even beer, and much more.

Ninety cents of every dollar in America spent on food is spent on processed foods. The food industry uses HFCS more than any other sweetener because it is CHEAP to produce, transport and store. As always, just follow the money.

Harmful?
High fructose corn syrup is the most dangerous and damaging food additives ever created (I would say processed soy is a close second, followed by MSG).

Research findings since 2004 have been extremely damaging to the high fructose corn syrup market. We just don't hear or see these findings, which I will explain later under "Natural."

Increased Inflammation:
HFCS has been shown to interfere with a key enzyme in our body that delivers copper to the vital organs. This leads to copper deficiency in some, but adversely affects organ systems in many: heart, liver, testes, pancreas...which increases inflammation in the body....which equates to disease and symptoms.

HFCS has been strongly linked to the sharp rise in both obesity and diabetes.

Furthermore, fructose is twenty to thirty more times glycating than glucose. This would turn anyone into a raging AGE-producing factory. This means more free radical production and advanced aging! Animals fed a high-fructose diet in lab studies developed livers that looked liked hardcore, aged alcoholics.

Weight Gain
There's another controversy blooming between the HFCS and sugar industries, and again, it's just another moot point. A Princeton University study has claimed that HFCS causes more weight gain than refined sugar does.

Industry-sponsored scientists have been quick to criticize the methodology of the research but scientist Miriam Bocarsly points out that the work was designed to demonstrate the long-term effects of HFCS. This is so important, she says, "because you don't eat high fructose corn syrup once; you eat it every day, probably since you were a child."

High fructose corn syrup has been linked to:
Diabetes
Heart Disease
Cancer
Obesity
Gout
Advanced/accelerated aging
Weakened immune system
Cirrhosis of the liver
Osteoporosis
Elevated cholesterol
Anemia
Mineral deficiency

"Natural"
You've probably seen the television commercials posted by the American Corn Growers Association. They challenge people to actually report what's specifically wrong with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and say: "It's made from corn, doesn't have artificial ingredients, has the same amount of calories as sugar and its fine in moderation."

The implication that HFCS is a "natural product" doesn't really say much. And "they," as in "You know what they say about it..." should have you questioning a thing or two.

Both of these implications are simply not true. They actually have a lot to say about why high fructose corn syrup is bad for you, and HFCS is anything but natural.

The Corn Refiners Association insists, "Research confirms that HFCS is safe and no different from other common sweeteners like table sugar and honey. All three sweeteners are nutritionally the same." This, of course, is all part of the Corn Refiners 30 million dollar advertising and public relations campaign to counter the overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary.

The FDA has challenged claims that HFCS is a natural sweetener since companies such as Pepsi are now boasting of the "real sugar" content in their sodas and companies like Cadbury and Kraft have been called out for labeling their products as "natural" when they contain HFCS.

The controversy between whether high-fructose corn syrup or sugar being natural is just a smokescreen -a distraction that attempts to blur the negative health consequences associated with both of them.

The Sugar Association and the Corn Growers and Refiners associations have been able to indulge in this controversy because the FDA had never created a standard for what is or isn't "natural." Although the standard still hasn't been set, the FDA has decided that the synthetic fixing agents used to produce HFCS does prompt the agency to "object to the use of the term 'natural' on a product containing HFCS."

Additionally...
HFCS is all manufactured from genetically modified corn. GMO corn has been linked to an increased incidence of corn related allergies.

It has also been recently revealed that HFCS contains trace amounts of mercury -an extremely powerful and dangerous neurotoxin (and, yes, the FDA knew/knows and continues to nothing about it). Autism has huge correlations to mercury. Autism now effects 1 in 90 children, and it continues to rise.

In close, the take home points are: Don't miss the forest for the trees with all these advertisements and controversy. It's simple, High Fructose Corn Syrup is NOT good for you! And neither is regular sugar!

Read the labels on any packaged food you buy to make sure it does not include HFCS. Or better yet, buy fresh, whole foods instead of packaged and processed.
